Year-End Blog
2024 has been a transformative year for HTEC, marked by significant growth and strengthened leadership in the hydrogen sector. Increased activity at our hydrogen refueling stations, reflect the rising demand for clean energy in transportation. We also launched our largest project to date, the H2 Gateway Program, featuring plans for multiple electrolyzers, refueling stations, and hydrogen trucks—making HTEC the first in Canada to lead such a large-scale initiative that stretches across the value chain. Additionally, we celebrated our 20th anniversary. This year-end blog will highlight our key milestones from 2024.
Our Project Highlights
This year was defined by bold initiatives and tangible progress in hydrogen infrastructure. Among our key accomplishments:
More Hydrogen Trucks
HTEC’s fleet for the BC Hydrogen Pilot Truck Program continues to expand with the arrival of the Hyundai Xcient, joining our Nikola Tre Hydrogen Fuel Cell Truck. More trucks are scheduled for delivery in the new year. We are delighted that fleet operators have leased all 12 trucks that form the pilot & port projects. In partnership with the OEMs and Velocity Truck Centre, we are rolling out technician training early 2025 and hope to get the trucks on the road as soon as possible. Additionally, we’re seeing increasing interest from fleet operators eager to lease our H2 Gateway hydrogen trucks, reflecting the growing demand for hydrogen vehicles.
Under Construction
We’ve made significant progress on the construction of two hydrogen stations and a production facility in Burnaby. These assets are key to advancing the deployment of heavy-duty vehicles on BC’s roads.
Once our heavy-duty hydrogen station on Tsawwassen First Nations (TFN) Land opens, we will deploy trucks from the BC Hydrogen Port and Pilot Truck Projects on BC roads, marking another exciting first for the province. At this station, we’ve collaborated with TFN artist Karl Morgan and TFN youth to create a mural, symbolizing our shared commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. We are excited to see this station begin operation later next year.
HTEC at Events
HTEC has continued to be an industry leader, with a record number of speaking engagements at major events throughout the year. HTEC attended conferences like the Canadian Hydrogen Convention, where it was recognized with the Hydrogen Leader of the Year award. HTEC also participated in numerous other events, including hy-fcell and the Center for Hydrogen Safety Americas Conference, and supported initiatives such as Toyota’s 60th Anniversary Cross Country Tour and the opening of the University of British Columbia’s hydrogen refueling station.
Looking Ahead to 2025
As 2024 wraps up, HTEC is excited about what the future holds. With a new office (2985 Virtual Way), a growing fleet of hydrogen trucks, and the upcoming completion of several key hydrogen infrastructure projects, 2025 promises to be another groundbreaking year for the company. HTEC is excited to continue its journey toward a sustainable future and looks forward to continuing to work with its partners, employees, and community to make that future a reality.
