Safety is our First Priority

Ensuring Safe, Reliable, and Responsible Hydrogen Adoption

Hydrogen is a key driver in Canada’s transition to clean energy. Like any fuel, it must be handled responsibly, with a strong understanding of its properties and well-established safety protocols. At HTEC, we prioritize safety at every level—from infrastructure design to fuel storage and refueling operations—ensuring hydrogen is integrated safely and effectively into our energy system.

Hydrogen is Safe

Non-Toxic & Clean

Hydrogen is free of harmful emissions and does not pose direct health risks if released.

Disperses Quickly

Being the lightest element, hydrogen rises and dissipates rapidly, reducing the risk of buildup in enclosed spaces.

Fire Safety Considerations

While hydrogen ignites easily, it burns cleanly with no soot or toxic byproducts. Its quick dispersion further minimizes fire hazards.

Built for Safety

With the right safety measures in place, hydrogen is a reliable and efficient fuel for the future. HTEC is committed to ensuring its safe adoption through innovation, regulation, and education.

Secure Storage & Transport

Hydrogen is stored in high-pressure tanks and cryogenic systems, reinforced with leak detection and pressure management technologies.

Refueling with Confidence

Our stations meet rigorous safety standards (NFPA 2, ISO 19880) and are equipped with automated shutdown and monitoring systems.

Industry-Leading Standards

HTEC adheres to strict provincial and national safety codes to ensure responsible hydrogen use.

First Responder Collaboration

We work with emergency services to provide specialized hydrogen safety training for rapid and effective response.

Safety is a shared responsibility, and we’re always improving to keep our people, partners, and communities safe.

Life Saving Rules

All 7 Life-Saving Rules (LSRs) have been created due to the high-risk work that we can potentially face on a day-to-day basis. The 7 LSRs are in place to empower our workers.

The Life-Saving Rules are not just designed to help guide effective work planning and hazard identification, but also to empower our workers to pause when faced with high-risk activities and encourage them to intervene if they observe unsafe situations or behaviors.
